Ski enthusiasts who want to enjoy the sport on a budget can explore Homeland, Europe’s first lift-free ski resort, in Montespluga, Italy, where access costs nothing. Skiers can scale the 3 000-metre-high slopes and choose from 11 marked uphill routes to access 3 642 hectares of off-piste snow. Those who want to extend their experience can stay at the Albergo della Posta hotel in the village.

Homeland, which opened earlier this year, is close to the border with Switzerland. Skis, boots and skins can be rented for €55 (R1 115) and safety lessons and an introduction to skiing with a professional guide can be arranged for €100 (R2 020).
